Off topic, how difficult is it to visit the Dead Sea and "swim"/sun bathe? I want to visit to improve my psoriasis skin condition, which I hear the Dead Sea minerals and sun are the best treatment in the world. Thanks a lot for any information. I can't really afford staying at a spa; are there any open free beach areas?

Cheers,
Curt in Hong Kong

Hi Curt,
I live in Israel and I know this board doesn't get much action, so I'll try to respond.

There are public beaches in Ein Gedi, one of the main tourist towns near the Dead Sea. This website talks a bit about that:

http://wikitravel.org/en/Dead_Sea

You could do some research on Ein Gedi and see where you can stay that might be fairly cheap. There are youth hostels there and also other accommodations that won't be as expensive as the big hotels.

Here's a website that I found that might get you started:

Hope that helps a little!
