I'd much rather drive in Guadalajara at night than drive in Los Angeles or say Washington D.C at night.

And let's face it... if the U.S could seriously do something about their huge consumption of drugs then this would all be academic.

I love the way U.S news agencies blow things out of proportion.

Blocking the road from the airport to Guadalajara is a big deal and a new thing. Jalisco state hasn't seen as much of the drug war as other places, much less the number 2 city in the land. There are a lot of expats living in Chapala as well.

Please let's not point fingers... drug use is pandemic. The US is just one port-of-call.

And the drug smuggling routes cartels fight over at the border states? Last time I checked, Mexico's northern border didn't have more than one other country on the other side.

And the last time I checked, Guadalajara wasn't anywhere near the American border. Did they move it? I'm a little confused why the poster might suggest the issue in the news (and my comment) was related to Mexican-American border smuggling routes.

I know Jalisco is a long way from Vera Cruz but a little research into the cartels, their territories in the north, and smuggling routes will help inform you.

Your comment seemed to suggest that this incident is related to drugs smuggled into places other than the US? I'm curious...I was pretty sure that all the drugs going over that northern border pretty much stay in the US.

I don't think you've confused anyone at all. It's very clear what you want to say to Greg.

I agree on this...this incident in GDL is not a good sign at all and foreign embassies are usually a little late in their reporting meaning other incidents probably brought them to this. I would think the fed here would jump on this quickly, but who knows?

i completely agre that countries have a responsibility to warn their citizens. The fustrating thing is that the U.S seems to view the drug-related violence as something unrelated to the real issue which is the ever increasing consumption of drugs in 'Westernised' countries. The U.S is just one port of call, for sure. It's also by far the biggest consumer of the drugs

ALSO - why doesn't the U.S accept that in the VAST MAJORITY of these incidents, the bad guys are using U.S sourced weapons?

I never saw warnings by Mexico when September 11 or July 7 happened.

My point is CONTEXT. If you read the warning you'd think that GDL is now a no-go city when it is totally the opposite. Such warnings are inflamatory and can potentially cause a lot of financial damage.

Let's see reports talking about the drug-related violence caused by increasing drugs consumption and fuelled by the lack of gun control north of the border.

let's stop calling the bad guys 'narco-trafficers' and call them TERRORISTS - in reality that is what they have tried to do in GDL.. create terror. THEN let's see how the U.S reacts to having terrorists on their southern border.

It'd dramatically change the war on drugs, I believe. (In Mexico narco trafficers create terror - Al Quaeda use drugs to fund terror.... doesn't seem too different to me)

The power of the gun-rights lobby aka the NRA.

Might this be related to the warning issued by the consulate given that both were published about the same time:

It looks like the U.S. Consulate's warning was very much in order.

Six dead and many wounded in a grenade and firearms attack on a Guadalajara nightclub:

I wonder if the Pan American games this October are going to be affected.
