Do you need a work visa before a language school will hire you? If so, how difficult is it to get without a contract? I read the other thread concerning a work visa, however I'm still unsure of the best way to become employed in Colombia. It seems like most schools want you to have a work visa before they hire you and to get a work visa you have to have a work contract. How can I get a job teaching in Colombia?

It's easy to get hired at an institute, but kind of difficult to get the work visa. Show up, get hired. Ask often about the visa.

MNguy, do most people just move to the country and look for work once they get there? Are you pretty much guaranteed a job once your there? It would be really disappointing to move there and come up empty handed while spending a decent of money at the same time.

You are basically guaranteed a job. For the duration of your tourist visa. Have your CELTA or TEFL in hand and you are mor likely to get the work visa.

It recently became easier to work here as they eliminated one of the requirements.

Don't worry so much, it it easy to work here, but yes you need to show up.

Quite a few people work with out a work visa, I have done so with no problem. If you find a place that offers one then you can take care of it while you are working for them.
