I have an MA and over eight years of teaching experience in Asia. I'm thinking of moving to Cambodia. What I'd like to know is, is it possible to show up in Phnom Penh on a tourist visa and find work, or must it be pre-arranged? Any help is much appreciated. |

Hey Hsinchuguy,
About the only way you are going to find work in Cambodia is to show up and look around. Pre-arranged jobs are very rare. This is my understanding anyway. I am sure Khmerhit can provide more details.
You can always visit the Khmer 440 discussion board for more information about finding a job in Cambodia. If you visit there, do yourself a favor and search older postings for answers you desire first, as some of the board regulars have recently become hostile to newbies asking questions that have been addressed in the past.
Good luck!

Based on what some of the English Teachers told me that I met while in Phnom Penh a few months ago, it is very easy to find work, especially for someone with your credentials Hsinchuguy. However, it apparently takes a month or two to get enough hours to make teaching there worth your while. Plus, new teachers, when they first start, get really crappy time slots(like 6 to 8 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening). Once you survive this trial period however, better time slots and more teaching hours become available. As I am sure you are aware, Khmerhit used to teach there, so you might want to send him a PM, as he knows much more about the situation in Phnom Penh than I do. Also, in addition to the site I linked in my previous message, this FAQ might answer some other basic questions you have regarding Cambodia.
Cambodia is a wonderful country. I am very tempted to teach there myself, but I have burning desire to teach in Vietnam that I need to address first!
Cheers,
Kirk |
