I'll be 60 in September. Is that a problem if I come to the Philippines looking for full-time ESL work?

Background.....BA, CELTA, 3 years in Los Angeles, 2 years in Thailand, 3 years in Korea, 1 year in Boston.......tons of experience in all subject areas especially in IELTS and TOEFL. I'm not a certified teacher so int'l schools are probably out.

I'm not worried about a work visa because my gf is a Filipina and we'll probably get married, but I'm not ready to retire, so I'm hoping I can land an ESL job somewhere in the Philippines.......anywhere BUT Manila.

What do you think?

Can you find work = yes (especially if there is no visa issue (you get your 13a or SSRV).
Will it be well paid = NO (p30-50k per month if you are lucky at most of them).
Will age be a factor = yes but if you are charismatic you can get around it.

There are lots of Korean/Japanese language schools in the NCR, Bagio and around Cebu.

They come and go with the breeze so you will have to do a bit of poking around to find the few that are currently in operation and have students (many of them are only busy during the Korean and Japanese school breaks).

Thanks tttompatz..............I've never been to the Philippines (as of yet) so I'm not quite sure about the places you mentioned. Can you tell me where NCR, Bagio is or what "NCR" stands for?? Of course I'm familiar with Cebu and aware of some schools there. As for the age problem, I'll start working on my "charisma" and charm them to death Smile

Bagio is a college town in central Luzon (up in the highlands). There are LOTS of Koreans there for language training.

NCR is the National Capital Region including the cities surrounding Manila.

Thanks again tttompatz............I'll start my search soon and see what transpires. It's good to what regions maight be fruitful. Thanks again.

Can I ask you one more question..........when looking for work in the Philippines, is it better to come there and knock on doors with resume in hand.........or..........is it OK to contact schools through their web sites (very few, if any, schools in the Philippines advertise on eslcafe.com, or anywhere else that I've seen)? If I contact them through their web sites, do you think I'd even get a response?

Boots on the ground. You won't get anywhere by e-mail unless you are a certified teacher.
