Just a little warning for anyone looking to get their TEFL or TESOL
certificate in Costa Rica or anywhere for that matter. I got my
certificate a couple of years ago in Costa Rica (I won't say the name of
the school cause I had a great time and don't want to smear their name) I
had no problems getting a job in San Jose, but when I came
to Korea, some schools I applied at didn't accept my certificate
because it wasn't "internationally recognized". After I looked on their website
I discovered that it was only accredited by the Government of Peru and
Guatemala, and not by an international accrediting body. I was very
disappointed and felt a little stupid for not finding out more BEFORE I
enrolled. I have recently found a job, but I feel it was much more
difficult and stressful and I'm getting paid less, just because my
certificate isn't CELTA or SIT or NCFE accredited (acronyms I had never
heard of before coming to Korea). Just a heads up to new TEFL teachers. |

As far as I know there arent any interenational accrediting bodies......so I wonder what that even means, unless they mean one of the well-know programs like a CELTA or a Trinity. Did they tell you what they meaned by that? If you had a good experience and learned a lot, then the program did what you needed it to do at the time. What is asked for for various jobs can vary from country to country, sometimes you have to have a certificate that is recognized in the country you want to work in, even if you already have a higher qualification, that might NOT be accepted. I agree that it is very arbitrary. |
