Hello there,
I have been thinking about coming over to Japan to get an English teaching job. My nationality is British and I am 33 years old, female.
Could someone tell me if there's any difference in requirements for a visa as a tutor in Japan between applying from overseas and applying in Japan for a teaching job (whether working in an eikaiwa or ALT in public schools)?
For instance, the general (and standard?) requirements mentioned for a successful visa application in most ads on the internet are:
1) Native English speaker
2) 12 years of education (btw, uni included?) in schools in which English is used as a medium of instruction
3) University graduate
...................
..................
Also, do I still have to wait for 1.5 - 2 months (an overseas applicant ) for the working visa before I can start working if I am in Japan? In what way(s) would the documentation requirements differ?
Many thanks

There is no "tutor" visa.
Eikaiwa instructors get Specialist in Humanities/International Relations work visas.
ALTs get Instructor visas.
Documents they need to provide are shown here.

Criteria of the overall requirements is shown here:

Basically, a Brit with a bachelor's degree or equivalent is eligible for either type of visa.
Whether you apply from abroad or your home country makes no difference in procedures.

Visa processing may take 2-8 weeks. There is no getting around this or in hastening the process. Some people will work before the visa is in hand, as long as the paperwork is being processed. This is risky, though, and if you have an unscrupulous employer (see stumptowny's thread as an example), you might have serious problems. |
