Hello,
I'm interested in working for an oil/gas company teaching ESP/English.
One reason is obviously the money, but I assume rightly or wrongly the students are going to be a bit more mature/eager to learn than university students.
I currently work in academia in Korea and have 5 years post MA teaching experience a few academic publications.
Where do I look for oil/gas jobs, could any body give me some pointers.
Thank you |

If you're female, you're pretty much out of luck. But anyway, a search within the discussion forums yielded the following:

I think you may be inaccurate in your assumption that students may be more mature and/or eager to learn. Not that there aren't students who fit that profile, but the vast majority do not.
Within these companies, there are specialist units that deal with those gifted enough to fit that bill but landing a job at them can be a challenge. Many people take a job with the less gifted and then work their way inward to where the real teaching is done through a combination of experience and contacts in-house. Suggest you look at the websites of these companies in particular and see if they are advertising specifically for positions that suit you.
This may not apply, but unless your MA is directly related to EFL and you also have EFL certification, you may not qualify for work in the ME even with the experience you describe. You wouldn't in Saudi for sure, for example. |

thank you all for the replies the links especially.
My MA is TESOL just in case.
I was wondering how does one transition from teaching English at oil companies to the more lucrative training positions that I see on oil and gas job sites? Or is that transition pretty impossible. |

Generally, a trainer (in any field) should have both industry knowledge and experience. A background or training in instructional systems design is a plus; a degree in ISD is even better for mainstream training jobs. But as you've found with those opportunities, that doesn't fit your background as an English language teacher---at least at this time. As Sicklyman suggested, take a look at the companies' websites, and if there are any openings that match your present qualifications, apply. |

You've assumed wrongly. Oil company employees can be some of the worst. Take Qatar Petroleum, for example. They are the worst 'students' I've ever had in my life. I'm getting shivers down my spine just thinking about the Mickey Mouse training operation they run over there.
The money isn't always that spectacular either, and even if it is, they'll want their pound of flesh... |
