What a shame - a fine talent but a tormented soul. Her Back to Black album is incredibly good, and her single Rehab ( ironic title/lyrics, considering)
"They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
You tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
I'd rather be at home with Ray
I ain't got seventy days
Cos there's nothing, nothing you can't teach me
That I can't learn from Mr Hathaway
I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know know
I don't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
You tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
The man said why you think you here?
I said I got no idea
I'm gonna, gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near
He said I just think you're depressed
Yes me, baby, and the rest
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know know
I don't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
You tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
I don't ever want to drink again
I just, ooh I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
And have everyone think I've gone mad
And it's not just my pride
It's just til these tears have dried
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
You tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go, go, go
is, too.
Either a suicide or an overdose (in itself a kind of suicide,) I imagine.
May she rest in peace.
Regards,
John |

The world has lost a once-in-a -generation talent and it is a darker place for it. That she joins the "Forever 27 club" of musical talents who died at the same age, and is now in the company of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain , is no comfort.
Such a waste of raw talent. |

Personally I do not care that some over-rated cokehead overdosed. |

Dear scot47,
"No man is an island, entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls it tolls for thee." |

As ESL teachers, we are not making millions.
But we should be glad that we are not rich and famous drug-addicts.
Let us count our blessings!

Paul Simon didnt agree. I am a rock, I am an island And I prefer Simon to Donne. |

Dear sheik,
But Mr. Simon doesn't like it too much:
"In interviews, Simon has said that this (I Am a Rock) is one of his two least favorite of his own songs (the other is The Dangling Conversation). Perhaps the severity of the isolation imagery is too harsh. Perhaps it simply makes no sense to create a character who so purposefully isolates himself after all the warnings, all album long, about the effects-- from societal breakdown to suicide-- of such a self-imposed hermit-state.
We can only hope for this depressed, disheartened character's sake that he takes his own "womb" imagery to heart-- that his solitary confinement is temporary, and that he emerges from it with a sense of birth and life and a connection with the world. To remain in exile within society would be, to borrow a phrase, most peculiar."

The Cult of the Celebrity is one of the features of modern 'Civilisation' that I find repellent. |

Dear eurobound,
I like it, too - but here's what Mr. Simon thought:
"Simon explained that he did not like this song because he felt it sounded like a college student wrote it."
"But it could just have easily been because it was hard to talk about, well, not talking about things."
But then, maybe I've never outgrown being sophmoric

John |

Interesting, thanks.
Although the references to Dickinson/Frost have always grated a little with me, this...
'Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm
Couplets out of rhyme...'
...gets me every time |

Dear eurobound,
Loves those lines - and serendipitously enough (or did you plan it?) your addition rhymed:
"Couplets out of rhyme...'"
...gets me every time
