Dear All
I have just done a CD with a class of mine and the following lines were in the script:
This feeling is even stronger for extreme sports, where the person faces real danger.
A student asked me why the writer had used the word 'where' and I could not answer it. Can anyone help?
Sincerely
Charlie Warth |

"Where the person feels real danger" is an adverb clause. Adverbs answer the questions "Where, when, why, how, to what extent and how much". Adverbs/adverb clauses can come anywhere in a sentence, so this one is correctly placed even though it is not next to the word it is modifying. I hope this helps. |

I think I would replace the word where with when. |

I have been here twenty years, and I have never known what an "adverb" was. Thanks. |

Where is often used to describe situations. So in your sentence, the situation implied is extreme sports, in which situation the person feels real danger. |
