I am moving to Valpo in Sepember. I have a BA in Linguistics, teaching experience, and a TEFL certificate. I want to check schools out once there, so I will not have a work visa upon arriving. Is it possible to receive a work visa once you get hired? What are the disadvantages/advantages of waiting to get a work visa? Where does one apply for a work visa in chile?

Also, If I decided to move to Brazil from Chile, can I acquire a work visa for Brazil in Chile, ie; at the Brazilian Embassy in Chile?

Thank you fellow educators, and if your in Valpo specifically feel free to send me an email, I can't wait to get some surf down there.

It is possible to recieve a work visa once you're hired. The disadvantage is that its not a sure deal that you will have a job that you like within the time period of your tourist visa. Some companies also insist on giving you a subject to contract visa meaning you can only work for them, and if you change jobs you have to change visas too...which can be a pain.

The advantages could be cheaper cost, depending. I am from the US and applying for the visa here is FREE while applying for the same visa while in the US costs 400-500 dollars. Not every country has the same fees.

You must take a work contract, with a special clause saying that you will not stop working until you have the appropriate visa paperwork, to extranjeria which is located in the center of valparaiso. It is a slow process but you are pretty much set once it is at least in process.

I have no idea about the Brazilan work visa ,though you can apply for a tourist visa at the brazilian embassy in santiago so perhaps they could offer that service too...
