To everyone out there in Japanville: Wanted to know what the job market is right now in Japan in 2011? I worked for JET from 1999-2002 when the JET Program still flew folks over business class and stayed at the major Five Star hotels in downtown Tokyo, after having lived and traveled out of my VW for three months. Im sure those days are over, but wanted to know if any good jobs are out there right now that don't involve living directly in dangerous levels of radiation? Ideally something up in the mountains perhaps Takayama, Nagano or Hokkaido? I lived in Gifu for three years, but would be interested in some rural type situation if available. Anyone out there share any heads up you have on this Thanks, Geoffrey Bertonneau |

1. Don't expect a heckuva lot of places to fly you here at all, let alone business class, or to put you up in any fancy hotels. You can probably count the number of places that do that on one hand and still have fingers left over.
2. Radiation? Plenty of space all over the country that is/was unaffected. Read some government links to see how close to Fukushima is still considered dangerous.
3. Wanted to know what the job market is right now in Japan in 2011? Well, 2011 is more than half over. Just when do you plan to come here? You know it will take 2-4 months to land a job and get a visa, let alone get paid the first time.
You have to give us more to go on than the fact that you were here for JET:
What do you consider "good jobs"? (salaries have fallen since 2002)
When do you want to come?
What sort of teaching job(s) are you hoping to get?
Other than a generic BA degree, what qualifications do you have?
Are you planning to come here to look for a job, or do you want to get hired before you come?
How much money do you have to tide you over?
What do you want to make in terms of salary (or at least in terms of savings after deductions)?
I can't speak for Takayama or Nagano, but Hokkaido jobs are listed all in one package on the Hokkaido Insider (paid subscription necessary, or you can get the same job ads for free if you scour a bunch of sites instead). I wouldn't limit myself to just a couple of areas.
Basically, things are still very tight here. |

Hi Geoffrey,
There are still a lot of EFL teaching positions at various levels open here in Japan. You're best to come over and have a look around. Being here and able to get in to do interviews is important. Lots of jobs around Nagoya and of course Osaka and Tokyo. |

Do you know what the job situation is like in Hiroshima? I've not found too many listings there - looked here on ESL Cafe as well as Ohayo Sensei. |

think_balance,
Have you tried this site?
www.gethiroshima.com
Why are you limiting yourself to just one city? |
