Hi guys!

I am Canadian-Italian - thinking of making the jump across the pond to teach English spring 2012.

But I have a question - what are the qualifications/requirements that are most often desired?

I do not have a BA, but am starting CELTA in January. Is this sufficient?

Thanks!

NB And I don't want to be only able to find sketchy jobs.

I have come across teachers without a BA, but many schools / institutions will expect it along with CELTA / Trinity TESOL and experience. In the company I worked for, we needed to forward teachers' CVs to take part in a bid. One of the requirements (it was a publicly funded bid) was a bachelor's degree, meaning that any teachers without this would not be eligible to teach on the program.

A lot depends on how you word your CV. If you have any higher ed, make something of it. If you lack teaching experience, talk up any business experience - this might position you for work where you need to teach business English or work in-company.

Do you have a BSc or no kind of degree? If you're looking at private schools then there shouldn't really be a problem if you've got a CELTA except maybe in some of the big cities. As was said before though, if you're looking at government/EU-funded schemes, very common in the south, then you'll need a degree and as most private schools take contracts for these schemes you may be out of luck.

My school for instance on paper requires a CELTA and three years experience but I have seen that occasionally they have employed people with less experience because they already have some commercial experience (useful for business english)
