|
|
Hi
I have been trying to get through to some organisations in Germany by phone and it appears that phone numbers there have no fixed format and number of digits. Even landline numbers are hard to get my head around.
Example:
49 4421 749 574
49 40 32 58 87-0
49 7551 20 46
Is there any logic at all or is this issue something to do with the combining of east and west of the country.
Thanks

Hi Athenaboy,
The first and third numbers are smaller towns. That's why the prefix (Vorwahl) is, e.g. 07551. You drop the zero and at the 49 (country code), plus whatever you need before that to call from the country you are in.
The 40 (or 040) is Hamburg. I guess there isn't an exact way to separate the numbers. Usually I would see a number, when someone writes it down as, e.g. 07551/20 46. I think the numbers vary because of the size of the towns. To my knowledge it has nothing to do with the East-West combining of the country. |

Hi
Thank you for that. That goes some way to explaining the issue. Strange that, in one or two cases, even though a city may be quite large that the numbers are so short.
Anyway, cheers for that.
