So a friend of mine currently teaches in Kiev and says he can hook me up with a good TEFL/CELTA course and school there with good housing. How much money should I save up? I'm trying to take into account

1) Airfare
2) Emergency airfare (in case I need to bounce on home!)
3) First few months' expenses (until I get my first paycheck)
4) Money for the course (something ~$2,000, he said)

I'm thinking about $5-6k, since he said 2 of the schools he teaches at do airfare re-compensation. Any advice and brutal honesty would help greatly.

You didn't mention if you'll need housing or not or where is home. All figures I'm giving you are USD.

1) Airfare - if North America - $2000; if UK $1000
2) Emergency airfare (in case I need to bounce on home!) (see above)
3) First few months' expenses - w/ housing $750; w/out housing $1500
4) Money for the course (something ~$2,000, he said) - $2000

$2000 + ($1500 x3) + $2000 = $8500 on the high end

$1000 + ($750 x3) + $2000 = $5250 on the low end

If you live like a monk, you should be able to make it on $25 / day. That is the rule of thumb.
