I'm an American and might be in the Middle East around the time of TESOL Arabia. Would this be a good opportunity for me to network with employers (universities) in the region? Or is it typically geared more toward nationals teaching in the area? Thanks!

Yes... a perfect opportunity...

There will be more Western expat teachers than local teachers - as few of them are teaching university level English. There is a job fair, and it may be even more useful to network with the other teachers to learn the ins and outs of the different employers.

I would go for it.

Opportunities are few and far between in this bad economy. There may not be another chance in a long time.

My veiled sentiments...

I partially agree with both of you. It really depends on your profile. As someone who required educational benefits for a child, the opportunities were few and far between. For those less demanding, there were many more opportunities in the region. "Region" can be taken for code as Saudi. THEY were swarming the place and this was in 2010.

I think TESOL Arabia is an excellent place to get the lay of the land. The conference has a good mix of Arab and non-Arab teachers.

Hmmm - not much in the way of job ads other than the once glorious HCT...any rumblings of anything else likely in the very short term?

TESOL Arabia Conference is not cheap. You will have to dig deep into your purse but there is a good chance of getting a job.

For those of you attending TESOL Arabia this month, there's been a change of venue. According to their website, the conference will be held at Dubai Women's College.

This just in! The ADM (HCT-Abu Dhabi Men's College) has chosen not to renew many staff who are multi-talented, and, all the way up to the PhD level.

Question: Why not renew valuable staff with multiple abilities (i.e. English AND other subjects) and those with doctorates?

Answer (from the wife): An attempt to cull higher-paid staff in order to attract lower-paid victims as the Treasuries are running dry.

HCT is a sinking ship...except for the baby-sitting class...for them, the band just plays on!

It's the stone-cold reality!
