I apologize if this has been discussed in this forum and I couldn't find it because I am inept at using the search...
A friend is moving from the UAE to Qatar and planned to drive his car there and have it registered in Qatar. He has been there many times and has seen ten year old vehicles on the roads but he's been told that they will not register his car because he is bringing a car that is more than 5 years old. Does Qatar really not allow cars to be registered that are over 5 years old? Is there a grandfather clause for cars already within the country?
I appreciate any input on the matter. |

I believe that the rule is that you can not import a car that is more than 5 years old. This is not uncommon in the Gulf.
It doesn't affect cars already in country.

In my humble opinion, importing your own car into Qatar (or into any other country) is too expensive.
Why not lease or rent a car in Qatar? Or, rely on good public transit?
That way, you won't have to worry about some silly 5-year rule. And you'll save money for more important things (housing, food, etc.).
Just expressing my veiled sentiments.

I imported my 6 month old Toyota purchased in Kuwait to Oman. It wasn't that expensive, as I also had some furniture I could include and it went by container on a ship. My super efficient shipping company handled customs and had it registered and tagged within a couple days of my arrival... and all I had was a tourist visa in my passport. (sadly they no longer do personal shipments)
It depends on the situation, of course... age of the car will be an issue in every country.

Oman is a more reasonable place with a more reasonable system for importing vehicles. |
