Can anyone in Egypt tell me if they feel the situation there is stable / secure enough to move their with a family? I'm sure the University Area and faculty housing is safe enough, but would my wife and kids feel like it was too dangerous to stray far from home in the current climate? I'd love your input. |

That is a difficult one to answer as many things are not as they were, though I still have many friends who live there. The situation is still rather fluid, and only you can decide whether you think that you can take the chance with your family. AUC has always taken very good care of their faculty and staff with their safety and well-being being paramount. I really think that they are the ones to discuss this issue with. If your kids are school age, where will they be attending school... presumably CAC... where will you live? Will the kids have to bus a long distance to get there, and will you live in Maadi near CAC and you have to commute to the AUC campus.
While I would have no fear of jumping into a job there myself... it is only myself that I may be putting at risk. No one can answer this for you. We can only say that up to this point, no expat teachers have been attacked, but I do have friends who have been in situations where they were afraid for the first time ever in Cairo.

I would stay away from Cairo until Egypt becomes more stable.
No need to risk your life for a teaching job.

It's good advice because Egypt is still a dangerous and unstable place.
Recently, a female CBS reporter was sexually assaulted there by crowds of men.
Egypt after the revolution...
...it's scary!

Any woman wading into a large group of male demonstrators rioting anywhere in the world is taking a giant risk. While what happened to her was unpleasant, it wasn't rape and could have been significantly worse. It is part of their job though. I doubt that you or I... or our original poster is planning to take his family to Tahrir Square in the middle of any giant demonstrations. (though I have male friends who have lived there for years who were out there in support and found it a thrilling experience in grassroots democracy.)
Yes, things are unsettled and one should think it through, but the example of the US reporter hasn't anything to do with it.

She's South African by birth...
It's a cryin' shame...not being South African...a woman being "man"-handled as she was! |

Actually, the reporter was raped. And it was violent.

Not technically true. It would be considered a sexual assault and of course it was violent and horrible. But, as I said, this is an occupational hazard when you wade into a riot.

Agreed! Sometimes, people get so much into themselves that they forget the realities on the ground!
It's a "man's" world and, only the fuelish forget that! |

It may have been dangerous. But the reporter still didn't deserve to get raped.

Nobody suggested that she "deserved" anything. Part of covering breaking news that involves riot or wars is that the reporters put their lives on the line and in the last few years a significant number have died.
But that is irrelevant as to whether to take a job teaching at a university out in the perimeter of the city. His best source of advice and information on this topic is AUC itself. Not us nor the US media...

60 Minutes had an "update on the revolution" that aired yesterday:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/09/60minutes/main20117402.shtml?tag=contentMain;cbsCarousel
From that segment, I got the impression it was very much like "We Won't Get Fooled Again"
"There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss"
The "new boss" being the military.
Regards,
John |
