You might want to try the 'Old Manor' bar
on the top floor of the Mercure Grand Hotel,
(formerly the Sofitel), on Musherib Street.

It isn't as dark and crowded as Diggers,
but it isn't as antiseptic as most other bars in Doha, either.

An amazing number of good new hotels - but do they cost. I was amazed to find out how many restaurants in the Pearl Qatar have drinky-poo permits! You can have an Italian meal and a bottle of good (but expensive) vino. I find the changes in the past two years have been nothing short of astonishing. Some great hotels but everything is so so so expensive. You need to earn over 15,000 QR plus accomodation to live decently. This is definitely the most expensive country in the Gulf to live in. The restaurants cost a lot more than in the UAE. The cost of living is so high. The problem is - there are too many places to go and too many things to do - it's not like it used to be. My mind is boggling. The past 3 days have been non-stop trips to some amazing restaurants in Souk Waqif and Katara and the Pearl with old chums, bums and cronies. I don't think I could survive living here if I didn't earn at 16 thou.
