I am interested in hearing about how difficult it may be to get a position teaching English in Budapest (or environs) considering the following: I am not a teacher, but have a few years' experience informally "teaching" conversational English to newcomers to Canada; I plan to get a CELTA in Budapest when I arrive; I have a graduate degree (business) and am interested in teaching business and/or legal English; I have several years experience in banking; and I'm unilingual (currently!). What are the best schools to try and what pay could one expect? Please note that work permits, etc. are not an issue in my case.

Did someone tell you that you didn't need one to teach there?Or what?Just curious.

There used to be an outfit called SOL that placed people in Hungary(not necessarily Budapest). There is also one called CETP(but they charge a large placement fee),so I would not recommend them.

You can probably pick up some kind of teaching job in Budapest...although it only be teaching privates at first. With your background, you can probably get the kind of position you are looking for, though it might take awhile. And of course,do not expect to make much money.

Best of luck.Budapest is a wonderful city. Smile

International house has a large school in Budapest http://www.ih.hu/en/where you can do the CELTA and possibly find work with them after you complete the course. They employ a large number of teachers though the turnover rate isn't very high as teachers tend to stay a while once they get there.
The pay in Hungary is low but you can live on it. When i was looking into work there, about 3 years ago, the pay was about 300 pounds a month with a flat provided. I believe that Bell also have a school in Budapest.
Hope this helps you.
