Canada has 3 categories:
Indictable
Hybrid (can be prosecuted as either indictable or summary)
Summary
An "indictable" offence is the most severe and is sort of the equivalent of a "felony" in the US. Indictable offences in Canada mean the accused must appear in court and there are no limitations (ie. murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, very serious financial crimes).
A summary offence is similar to a misdemeanor (ie. may not have to appear in court).
I'm sure there's more information about this online somewhere, this is just my recollection from my pre-TESL career... |
