|
|
Hello,
I am a teacher (at an international school) with 9 years of teaching experience.
I am being offered :
9025 QR per month
single housing
gratuity leave equivalent to 75 % of basic salary (should it not be 100% ??)
extra luggage allowance
settling in allowance
medical
Is this fair ?

I'm assuming the OR is a typo and you mean QR (they are not equivalent if indeed it isn't an error).
Gratuity and leave are two different things. If you mean end of service gratuity, Qatari law states that you are paid minimum 3 wks salary extra for every full year of service. So if your contract is for 2 years, you would receive 6 weeks salary as gratuity.
You don't mention annual tickets home, the better schools offer this. Does your accomodation include utilities and is it fully furnished - I'm not familiar with a settling in allowance. |

That is less than US$2500 a month. Do you have your home country teaching certificate/license? With that and 9 years of related experience, you should be getting more than that in Qatar I would think.
As to gratuities, from what is posted here, they range from 50% to 100% of monthly salary... and what part of the salary it covers. Some countries it starts the first year, some it doesn't start until the 2nd year or even longer. Many places have a "base salary" which is a portion of the your monthly salary and that is what the gratuity is based on... It often takes a bit of contract study to calculate what it will be.

The gratuity I mentioned is the minimum required by law, some places offer 1 month's salary per year completed (if you complete the contract).
As I don't pay utilities nor do any of my acquaintance, I can't comment on costs there.
If you're working at a pseudo international/English/American school (they often use English/Modern/International in their titles) about 9000 is probably pretty good, compared to the 2 or 3K the subcontinent teachers are receiving with no benefits (local hires on spouse's sponsorship).
I don't think they're a great place to work, especially if you have Western qualifications and experience - you could earn 25= 50% more (and not have a utility bill)

This salary sounds low! When I taught in Qatar, I was making 10400R in my first year (directly after graduating with my BEd), and then I made 11600R in my second year. The school also paid for our utilities. One downside was that our housing was in an apartment building in the middle of the desert (nothing around us except for a camel farm and a labourers' camp). We each had our own apartments, but none of the amenities associated with the compound living that most Western expats experience. Hope that everything works out for you with teaching in Qatar. |

I lived in Qatar 2000-2003 and I can tell you that your offer is an insult. |
