Hi all

I'm based in Paris, and have a student here who wants to spend between 2 and 5 weeks in the UK this summer to improve her English. She's 28 years old, already has a pretty good intermediate level of English, and works full time in HR (so would be using a mixture of paid and unpaid leave to do this trip). Her native languages are French and Arabic.

She asked me if I had any advice on the best way to go about the whole thing, as she wants to start making plans - but although I lived in the UK for 25 years, I never taught ESL there, so I'm really not sure.

I think she's quite open to ideas, but money is definitely a concern - she said the prices she had seen for courses in some of the London schools would be too expensive for her, when factoring in accomodation etc. She'd be interested in either just an unstructured immersion experience (ie au-pair or an internship) and/or proper lessons if the quality was good and the price not too extortionate.

Any suggestions on good schools, locations, ways to keep costs down, any clever alternative ideas I may not be thinking of?

Thanks in advance

It's a no-brainer: Check out the better language schools in Paris.

If London is a must, then I would say Edwards Language School offers good value in terms of its course fees. http://www.edwards-language-school.co.uk/prices.htm But summer in London is going to be awful this year because of the Olympics; the accommodation will be very expensive indeed.

There are plenty of language schools in Bournemouth. Norwich is another place worth looking. In terms of some sort of level of regulation, check out the British Council list of schools:
