Be aware of the ESL climate in North America and be ready to make changes when returning home. While a career as a TEFLer may not provide riches, it does result in a certain level of flexibility and adaptability, both of which are invaluable in a difficult job market.

I agree. I'd like to add that it's important to look at trends in education and learning when considering your transferable skills as well as any additional training you might need. For example, educational technology and instructional systems design are big and growing in North America and abroad; they're relevant in just about all industries, not just those related to academia. A background and international experience in teaching is a huge plus for those looking (and willing) to transition into a stable, full time career in one of these fields.
