I'm an American with no offers. Let me see if I have a good first approximation of what to do to get a job or start a freelance business in Germany.

1) good idea to get a non-working residence permit in Houston before departure

2) upon arrival in German city of choice, find an apartment and register with the local Standesamt within one week

3) find a job

4) convert non-working residence permit into work-visa residence permit or freelance-business residence permit, depending on type of job offered

That about right? Any advice about important details?
