With the birth rate falling and the numbers of students falling drastically in Taiwan, it is no wonder that the MOE is now promoting mergers among national universities as a solution to the problem. Of course Taiwan has far too many universities so perhaps this is a good thing. According to MOE officials: "Taiwan now boasts the highest density of universities in the world, with a total of 162 universities, including 53 national universities and 109 private ones on a land area of only 36,000 square kilometers."
