Just seen a couple more ludicrous adverts on tefl.com and thought I'd share with those of us unfortunate enough to be trying to earn a crust in miserable old Blighty

Director of Studies
Portsmouth Language College
http://www.tefl.com/jobs/job.html?jo_id=49918from=rss

DELTA qualified (or absolute equivalent) individual is essential. Please no time wasters.

23,000 per annum

If you don't want time wasters how about offering a reasonable salary.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
Conlan School Ltd
http://www.tefl.com/jobs/job.html?jo_id=49942from=rss

Your normal place of work be our Abergele centre, provided that the Employer reserves the right to change this to any place within UK, in particular to our new Chester centre. You must give your availability to be on-call and work on week-ends.

Salary: 20-22k

So, you'll be working somewhere in the UK, you'll be on call outside work hours and you'll need to work weekends. All for 22,000 - where do I sign up!

The DELTA seems to be losing its market value, along with most other British qualifications. The reason is that the market is saturated with DELTA's and CELTA's and MA's and employers can simply pick and choose. In the end, choice often comes down to choosing the sucker who wears the silly smile and is prepared to work for pittance. The TEFL industry is in urgent need of two things: 1. Regulation; and 2. A union.

And it's not just grim up North . . . the South is bloody grim too. The only direction for any TEFL teacher with any serious credentials is: OVERSEAS.

Many such colleges offer you between 15-20 per teaching hour. Nothing for preparation, time with students. Teachers are usually recruited through agencies. If you're really luck some agencies will offer around 1 holiday pay. All taxable of course.

The average salary for a DoS/ADoS in London, fully qualified and with about 10 years of experience, is about the same as a starting salary for a fresh graduate. In the provinces, of course, it's much lower. Salaries for EFL teachers are on a par with supermarket check-out operators.

The only way is OUT, I'm afraid. Either you decide to become a proper teacher and do a PGCE to work at primary or secondary level, or you just get out of the game altogether. It really is that stark ... and simple!

I've got the OP's salaries beat. Kaplan are asking for a DELTA for a measly 17000 - 19000pa. How low can we go? Suckers step forward.

To be fair it's not all bad. There are some pretty well paid uni jobs going around (e.g. https://staffrecruitment.coventry.ac.uk/tlive_webrecruitment/wrd/run//ETREC107GF.open?VACANCY_ID%3d9203063gwT&WVID=1861420Izv).

I just wonder who it is accepting 23K to work in central London!
