Hi All,

Does anyone out there know what the latest is regarding testing and getting a work visa? If so, does a +ve result mean a definite no or being burned at the stake?

Cheers!

Hi indobear,

I'm no expert but as no one else has chimed in with an answer I'll do my best. When I did my health check, which was well over two years ago now, there was no blood test. It's possible that this may have changed but I doubt it as chances are I would have heard something about it. I did have to do a chest x-ray and, if memory serves, sign a form declaring that I was in good health. There were a few other tests as well but they weren't onerous. Personally I'd just do the health check when you arrive here. I don't know where you heading to but, if it's Hanoi, I'd recommend the French Hospital as they are [or at least were] extremely efficient and I was in-and-out of there in no time Cool. Hope this helps and good luck!

It's also been a couple of years since I did mine (which was taken care of through ILA), but I believe that I did get a blood test. As for a positive HIV result, I can't comment on that.

Thanks for the reply Dekadan.

The blood test seems to be a definite when applying for the work permit.

The $64000 question is what happens when it comes back +ve. Or will I be able to work without the work permit. Questions, questions, questions......

My reply is the same as then. Why don't you try with some schools and just supply the 'without HIV' Health Check?

Thanks again jbhughes. Much, much appreciated.

But this situation is still clear as mud. I just don't get it........how can I not do the test when it is required by law and is standard practice (judging by what other people have posted and what I have read elsewhere)?

Hopefully, someone in exactly the same boat as me can shed some further light from actual experience of doing this whilst keeping under the radar.

A little bit off-topic, but does anyone have any definitive answers about what they are testing for with this health check? Is it to determine our health, or is it a drug test, std test, etc?

Hi MHT

I don't follow the 100,000-200,000 vnd comment? Is that for a bribe?

Best regards

I'm a little late in posting this, but this has been a concern for me as well. I wish it didn't have to be; it means closed doors on a lot of opportunities (Korea, China, etc.). C'est la vie.
Have you checked out http://www.hivrestrictions.org ? The website seems to be down frequently (for me, at least), but as far as I know it's more or less accurate and up-to-date.

Why does it matter if a teacher is HIV positive or not? Is it because they think the teacher is having sex with the students? or is it the government's attempt to keep infected people out the their country?

Sheer ignorance and stigmatization.
