What's driving unemployment in the US, besides the obvious global slowdown? Still sitting above 8%...

New Jersey has seen a sharp increase in unemployment as the government there shrinks the number of government workers.

Wisconsin has pretty good employment numbers...they learned from New Jersey. Instead of shrinking the number of government workers, they just cut their pay to balance the budget.

Texas is not doing too badly with an unemployment rate around 7%. Job growth there is found mostly in the public sector.

Florida is struggling with a rate over the national average, again, with state workers being cut.

Sensing a pattern here...

Only one long thing I have to say to everyone. Do you not know that the author of that hit piece has given over $40,000.00 to Obama and that when I call it a hit piece I am being nice about it. As far as connections between unemployment and state worker employment give me a break I come from a state where tens of millions of dollars are wasted on bloated payrolls. Look at the probation department scandal for one. The connection through the Bulger brothers to millions of dollars in corruption. One brother ran the state senate the other was a mass murderer who is only now being brought to justice. Please take your obviously biased one article research. I lived in Massachusetts for 41 out of 53 years of my life. I went to school there graduated from the state University and know the politics of the state like the back of my hand. Mitt Romney got rid of the corrupt younger brother William Bulger after he had dominated state politics for more than 2 decades and knew his brother James "Whitey" Bulger the head of the Irish mob called the Winter hill gang, but he looked the other way as Whitey either killed or ordered more than 19 people murdered. William Bulger known as Billy Bulger was finally forced out of politics by then Governor Mitt Romney he also cleaned up other state agencies such as Massport and the MDC. If you want more information on the Bulger brothers check a book "The Brothers Bulger" by Howie Carr. This man Mitt Romney got rid of a man Billy Bulger who corrupted everything in Massachusetts for decades and allowed his gangster brother to terrorize people in South Boston. Romney is a hero by forcing Bulger out never mind bring unemployment in Massachusetts down to 4.7% while he was governor. I know Massachusetts you don't so don't tell me about Mitt Romney. Staples, Office Maxx, Toys r US, Saved Baskin Robins etc. When you can create that many jobs or save that many jobs come and talk to me about Bain Capital never mind how many retired people made money by investing in Bain investments and are enjoying good retirements. I like people who only check out one article written in a left wing magazine by a person who between him and his wife were and are campaign "bundlers" for Barrack Obama you didn't do your research on that did you GUY "egg on your face" how does it feel. By the way the reporting the author quotes from the Boston Globe has been proven to be false by 3 reporters who did a series of articles in the Boston Herald they are Margery Egan, Peter Gelzinis and Howie Carr. By the way the Boston Globe is the left wing newspaper in Boston. You need to check your sources, before you put something down to make a point the article in Rolling Stones isn't worth the paper it's written on a hit piece written by a well connected Obama supporter and BUNDLER. So "nice try no CIGAR". I lived in Boston I know it's politics and what Romney did you can't tarnish his reputation he is as clean as a whistle nice try why don't you join Obama's dirty tricks division where the truth doesn't matter. Again NICE TRY, but NO CIGAR. Very Happy

P.S. When Romney left office at the end of 2006 we had over 3 billion in our states rainy day fund and an unemployment rate of 4.7% and Billy Bulger was retired forced out by Romney. Today his brother th mobster Whitey Bulger accused of 19 murders is sitting in prison awaiting his trial in March of next year quite a record. Romney turns around a state and forces out a corrupt person as well not bad sounds like presidential material to me.

Kona, Back a few posts ago you asked me for an answer and I replied and I waited 16 days, before I sent another e mail.Ii understand that you were very busy by the way congrats on your new job and moving to Korea. I have heard from my former students about it it should be an adventure for you. I would just say to you, if you think I am arrogant than you need to look the word up in the dictionary. Personally, if you never answer my posts that's OK. I have tried to give you a look at history, but it seems that is considered arrogance well, if laying out history is called arrogance in your book I plead guilty. You may find it hard to believe, but I believe in a women's right to choose with some modest restrictions. I also agree that the Patriot Act must go to restore American rights, but on economics and math Obama's platform makes no sense so dismiss me as you will, but we'll see on 11/6/12 whether
the majority of the American people are right wingers like me. By the way, if you mean by a right winger someone who prefers the U.S. Constitution and the Founders to Sol Alinsky and his most famous work "Rules for Radicals" Yes call me a right winger. As for you answering me later take your time I'm a busy person as well a month or so is fine with me take your time. I still have others to answer here.

disraeli, thank you for the congrats. I am pretty happy with my new job and I do think it is a step in the right direction for my career path.

As far as my comment goes, yes, I do think you were being arrogant. It had nothing to do with the fact that you disagree with me (I rather enjoy debate), or how you discussed the founding fathers, the US constitution, or any other part of your argument.

However, when you bring up "it's been 16 days since your last post" and then start gloating by saying "the socialist in chief will soon be out of office" and "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen", well yea you come off as arrogant (and by the way, this kitchen ain't that hot).

Let's start with this point:

The United States did violate the geneva convention by prisoners of war to inhumane treatment and interrogation.

The Fourth Geneva Convention

Article 3 states that "even where there is not a conflict of international character the parties must as a minimum adhere to minimal protections described as: noncombatants, members of armed forces who have laid down their arms, and combatants who are hors de combat (out of the fight) due to wounds, detention, or any other cause shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, with the following prohibitions:
(a) violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture;
(b) taking of hostages;
(c) outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment
(d) the passing of sentences and the carrying out of executions without previous judgment pronounced by a regularly constituted court, affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples."

Abu Grab-ass prison ring a bell? Direct violation of the geneva convention by making prisoners of war do degrading things, like stand butt naked in weird poses, water-boarding, stress poses, sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation and over stimulus, etc. You might call it minor, but they use to do the same shit to Americans in vietnam and I didn't think it was a joke. Two more points relate to this: 1. does it not count if we call them "enemy combatants" instead of "prisoners of war"? I don't think there's a difference, but if you want to play semantics be my guest. That's what the Office of Legal Counsel did and it doesn't hold water with very many people in the international community. 2. was it the case of just a few bad apples? Nope, the majority of the were top-down policies of the Bush administrations OLC through scum like David Addington and John Yoo.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5206908.stm

This is just the military component of it too. I haven't even discussed the extraordinary rendition program by the CIA. To give you some ideas on how interrogations could've been more effective, here is another interesting article.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/28/AR2008112802242.html

The mistreatment of prisoners during our combat operations has made many parts of the middle east recruiting grounds for Al-Qaeda and Islamic militants. I do not know what Johansen vs. Woodbury was/is about. I googled it and all I got was random information and no legal proceeding (although I did get this forum discussion as the seventh hit). Are you a lawyer? Do you have some sort of online archive I can access to view this information? Because a wealth information out there will show Iraq operations have been committed at the procedural level.

Alright moving on:

"Kona, if you had read The Second Treatise of Government by John Locke you wouldn't have to ask whether government is the problem or is it that we haven't been able to create good government."

Yes I read it every night before I go to bed, don't you? Seriously, don't just spout off the name of the book and then pretend that I should hold the same view point as you after I read it. John Locke was a very interesting philosopher for his time, and his viewpoints did influence the founding fathers to an appreciable degree (especially Thomas Jefferson, who is one of the most incredible thinkers of 18th century, and also probably the antithesis to hamilton), but he also said that human beings are born equal with natural rights that they must sacrifice to a certain extent to enter into a social compact i.e. government. When the government becomes corrupt people must hold the government accountable for its actions or rebel. Here, you and I are probably in agreement; where we diverge is you see a "a socialist in chief" bleeding out the american spirit of this great nation through a big government agenda, and I see a hand-in-glove corporate oligopoly that forces politicians to kow tow to a centralized economic aristocracy that holds no accountability to or remorse for its treatment of the populace that it depends on.

I find your account of how things should be to be based on Reagan Cold War maxims that I've heard borne out by many people in many places, with repetition and monotony, but let us not forget our dear friend John Locke who said:

"New opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common."

Moving on yet again:

Now lets get back to something I've already mentioned. Riddle me this here disraeli: does (or would, at the very least) a lack of transparency in the valuation of investment assets create instability and a lack of confidence in the markets, making credit scarce? Go back and READ my response to your arguments about Carter's Community Reinvestment Act and how that caused the recession, and the RESPOND to that. I'm interested in how you formed this conclusion, because in my estimation having low interest credit available to primarily urban communities doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of the defaulted mortgages were regular commercial mortgages that were not under any mandate by the CRA.

http://www.bis.org/publ/work259.pdf?noframes=1

Not only that, but they were selling *beep* and calling it gold. That was the primary problem; they had these sub primed mortgage backed securities that S&P and Moody's were rating as AAA. Is this not the problem???

And can you specifically cite ways that obama has "ripped up" the constitution? Obama not deporting illegals, you said? Wait, I don't think that is what he said, i think he said they are going to do targeted deportations for individuals that were more of a risk to the community. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you've never had a job where you had to work with ICE or Law Enforcements. The simple truth of it is, there are a lot of undocumented people in the US, and ICE does not investigate and possibly deport every single case that comes across their desk. So instead of doing these cases by a case by case basis, they will save their resources for those that commit crimes, not the former potential dream act recipients.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/08/dream-act-students-not-targeted-for-deportatiom.html

When I lived in Guadalajara, I met a guy from Chicago who got deported. Didn't speak a word of Spanish, because he came to the US at the age of 2. Don't know if he was college educated or not, but he was a well put together individual. He didn't even know he was undocumented till he was an adult. Sucks for him, because there isn't anything like the dream act to help him out now.

I could care less about the polls, I already know I don't think the way most American's do. I'd rather here you discuss the issues. But please, please, please, use some paragraphs and don't ramble. 30 line long paragraphs hurt my eyes. Be coherent.

oh yea, looked up "arrogant" in the dictionary. "Showing an offensive attitude of superiority : proceeding from or characterized by arrogance <an arrogant reply>".

Yup, I still think you were being arrogant.

First Guy, I answered your giving me the link to rolling stone magazine. Secondly your trying to sell in your September 4th entry the idea that government jobs should drive the economy the private sector, if you did some research that most jobs in the U.S. come from small and medium sized business government is a drag on the economy by and LARGE. It is funny how you used the same arguement as president Obama did in July where he claimed the "The private sector was doing just fine" then said that the Federal government should give more money to the states to keep teachers and other government workers on the job more money we don't have.

Kona, I'm not going to spend my life answering all of your 7 or 8 paragraphs 3 paragraphs maybe. First as far as the CRA goes who encouraged the derivatives bundled by Wall Street and sold to Fannie and Freddie where democratic appointees were running the show. Secondly the court case I mentioned can be found in any good history of the U.S. Supreme court it is as ground breaking in it's area as Marbury vs. Madison or the Dred Scott decision. As far as ripping up the constitution his disregard for the separation of powers such as does he have the right to even temporarily stop people from being deported or does he have the right to go around Congress by mandating through regulations such as through the EPA what he could't through Congress when they rejected his Cap and Trade legislation.

As far as any humiliation that may or may not have violated the rights of Iraquis that was stupid. I will say one thing though I come from a group of people who have had to live near the savages in the Middle East have you ever been there. Have you ever had someone get on a bus and then go for a bomb and the bomb failed to work right otherwise you might have died. June 18, 1982. I was in Jerusalem on vacation a lady with a baby came on the bus she tried to trigger a bomb under her shawl it failed she was grabbed before she could try a second time. 35 people on the bus including me women and children as well. When the Muslim world decides to act like civilized human beings maybe we won't over react sometimes. Just check today a rumor of a movie made in the U.S. that questions the prophet Muhamed sets people off in Libya and Egypt one American killed in a consulate in Libya and several people hurt both in Libya and Egypt. You can talk about human rights how about my right to live and I was almost killed how about hundreds of people murdered on buses or in the World Trade Center come on KONA are you that out of touch. No such thing as FREEDOM in the Islamic world one exception Turkey they act like "savages" look at Syria. Yes we might have gone over the line, but look at the provocations for G-d sake.

I'm sorry for the long paragraph, but the left's support for Islamic savages just makes me sick. I am an American, but I have many relatives in a small country over there who have to live with these problems every day.

No, you didn't. And no, I didn't. But feel free to discuss among yourself.

Maybe a game changer here...what timing this turns out to be, and quite out of the blue.

I'm an American, too. Not all of us refer to fellow human beings as savages in private or in public. That is soooo 1930s.

My take: Obama narrowly defeats Romney in an election that has fewer voters participating both due to Republican efforts to disenfranchise likely Democratic Party voters, and due to loss of enthusiasm by both parties. It looks like the people behind the two parties don't really care about the winner of the White House, but will be spending boatloads of cash to make the point that they can, and at the same time, make sure legislation is passed that keeps them getting richer, or blocks efforts to make them not richer. These powers that be will be making sure side issues are constantly raised in the media.

The Republicans don't really like the Democrats and do consider them to be rivals, but are happy enough to be the opposition party. The Democrats aren't as good at gaming the system. They are perhaps just as corrupt as the other guys, but like to play by the rules, perhaps figuring that they have more people in their base thereby giving them the advantage if everyone plays the same way.

I'll be voting third party for sure.

Roadwalker, What does someone have to do in order for you or other P C people give a value judgement on their actions. I reserve the term Human for people who care for their children and parents not for a person who takes a child with her in order to blow up a bus. I also, don't call people Human, if they drive airplanes into buildings. Killing women and children isn't an act of a human being, but which word will you allow me to use. You don't like savage well how about barbarian, animal I shouldn't use that it will insult animals who are more human than these so called human beings. P C is sooo left wing nonsense grow up how many massacres have to take place, before you will acknowledge that certain acts are beyond the bail and are just that acts of savages people who have no sense of civilization such as the savagery of the Nazis during WW 2. This is how savages get away with things, because good people are afraid to say something well I'm not afraid to call something what it is evil out and out evil. The other day a documentary was on TV remembering the 1972 massacre of the Israeli Olympic athletes savages then just a new generation of savages or barbarians use whichever name you want it comes to the same thing. I'm making a judgement and I'm not afraid to do so.

Guy, I did answer the question, but lets agree to disagree on that one. Yes the attacks in Libya and Egypt could be game changers. I must disagree with you though these types of attacks do not come from out of the blue. They are bound to happen when you have people who are hyper-sensitive and who do not agree with the West's ideas about tolerance. I haven't seen the movie or the trailer on You Tube that supposedly triggered this violence, but they have no conception of the idea of FREEDOM of SPEECH or EXPRESSION in the Islamic world especially in the Arab world. If it wasn't this movie it would have been something else that had these so called people murder more people as I said in my previous post to Roadwalker there are evil people and groups in the world and I'm not afraid to make judgements on their horrific actions. P C is for people who are afraid of making judgements well I'm not afraid especially after almost being killed by one of these so called people see my previous post. When you almost die you get a personal perspective on a mother who is willing to kill her own child for evil purposes.

Back to game changers Obama leading from behind that is what happens when you try to help people who are truly savages barbarians take your pick. Now the situation is worse since not 1, but 4 Americans were killed in Libya including the American ambassador who had risked his life during the fighting there. Again my take barbarians or savages.

Well now, last night I was thinking the game changer was in favor of Romney, given the location of the embassy attacks. Now he's just looking crass. Not sure how he can walk this one back now that more information has come out.

Unless you think this favours Romney, disraeli123. Care to spin us some more fiction?

Fox has been working all day to liken the attacks to 1979 Iran and even evoking Blackhawk Down imagery. But that's Fox of course.

Perhaps it is a game changer, or perhaps not. Hard to tell, but I guess not. For all of the noise coming from Fox and WSJ and others, Obama hasn't really offended Wall Street. The bankers are just hedging their bets, and making sure politicians know that their millions can be spent for them or against them. By the time the news cycles through, most USAns aren't better informed. So we still have people questioning Obama's place of birth as if it is relevant, or placing ads saying that he was apologizing for America (before this latest brouhaha), when the opposite is true. And the anti-black-guy-in-the-White-House crowd only hears what reinforces their beliefs.

The deciding factor will be likeability. Romney is just not a likeable guy. He can't communicate with people who aren't from his comfort zone, which is narrow. Obama is likeable. I even like him when he speaks, until I remember how he has continued and expanded aggressive wars; assassinated enemies, including American citizens; sheltered war criminals, American and foreign; sheltered financial criminals; and attacked whistle-blowers and the media to protect his administration's secrecy. But he connects on a personal level where Romney does not.

Romney will win the white male vote but Obama will take virtually all other categories.

Guy, When have I been spinning here. Let's be very explicit I am Jewish back in June of 1982 I was almost killed by one of these Islamic crazies a women comes onto a bus in Jerusalem with a baby she tries to blow the bus up. She would have killed 35 people women and children included. I was one of those 35 people the Israelis stopped her from trying a second time.

This isn't fiction and what happened in Libya and Eygpt isn't either and snubbing the Prime Minister of Israel at the same time tells me all I have to know about Obama. Obama has lost the Jewish vote you would just have to visit even a reformed Temple in Boston and talk to Jews they have had it with man. You can spin this all you want, but the polls are tightening and Americans do not like weaklings in the White House. Obama and his apology tour is almost over once and for all.
