I would always hire a bilingual non-native in preference to some monoglot EFLer ! |

I can imagine.
I like how you call it Berlin-West and not West Berlin--definitely the lingo from another era.
Berlin has always captured my imagination, for better or for worse

Berlin is a great city. Pity that the Mauer Museum contains so much blatant anti-Russian propaganda. |

The strange world of Divided Berlin. names are discussed here in Wikipedia
Most Westerners called the Western sectors "Berlin", unless further distinction was necessary. The West German Federal government officially called West Berlin "Berlin (West)", whereas the East German government commonly referred to it as "Westberlin"; it began to use "Berlin (West)" only in the late 1980s. Starting from 31 May 1961, East Berlin was officially called Berlin, Capital of the GDR (German: Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR), replacing the formerly used term Democratic Berlin), or simply "Berlin," by East Germany, and "Berlin (Ost)" by the West German Federal government. Other names used by West German media included "Ost Berlin", "Ostberlin", or "Ostsektor". These different naming conventions for the divided parts of Berlin when followed by individuals, governments, or media commonly indicated their political leanings. |

I do not have "Ostalgie". I am still suffering from "Wendekrankheit" ! (ie a nervous collapse occasioned by the takeover of the GDR by the Class Enemy from Bonn) |

Don't worry, Scot. It is merely a cunning plan to get the bourgeois powers to drop their guard. And then, when they least expect it, tanks of the progressives nations will roll through the Fulda Gap and liberate the toiling classes in the oppressed nations. |

Berlin is full of paradoxes but I for one have no doubt that the "Reichshauptstadt" is well on the way to becoming City Number One in Europe ! |

Was a taboo when I was there. I must try to investigate if I get a chance to visit in the summer of 2014
I have this disturbing interest in reinforced concrete and in the "Flakbunker" of the Third Reioch ! |

For whatever reason I am getting some serious nostalgia für Deutschland now after perusing the Germany boards here, not enough to make me even consider for a second to work there, but I now think that I want to visit in the Spring of 2016.
I completed an M.A. in German and did a semester abroad as an undergraduate at the University of Giessen in 1994 and then two semesters abroad as a graduate student at the University of Hamburg (1996-1997). I did a bit of free-lancing, teaching a graduate student English grammar--that would be the extent of my foray into teaching in Germany. My richer teaching experience took place in Austria. Good times back then!

scot47, how was that visit to Germany? I would like to go back and catch up. The last time I was in Berlin was in 2000! It goes without saying that that was a very different place then than what it is now.
Warm regards,

Berlin has changed so much. "Auferstanden aus Ruinen". the new Hauptbahnhof - a Shopping mall with Trains - and Potsdamer Platz for example. I think I preferred the old certainties of the GDR. perhaps not with Walter Ulbricht at the helm but Erich Honecker seemed okay, once you got used to the Stalinist "deformations". Oy veh, it did not last !
