Just wondering, for those of you already teaching in Taiwan, if there are any mandatory vaccinations one must get (coming from USA) before arrival into Taiwan. The CDC does give guidelines, but I thought I'd ask here. Also, I am planning to do some extensive traveling throughout SE Asia, and just wondering, for those who have also done this, what vaccinations you got or might recommend getting. Typhoid? Anti-malarial prophylaxis? Hep B?
Thanks.

If you want a job then take your measles vaccination paper...or get it again. None are mandatory, I don't get any for almost any place I go to but you should really talk to a doctor. If you are going deep south or love swamps then perhaps you'd be more at risk. I wouldn't get any but wouldn't advise anyone to do that before really looking into it.[/list] |

If you're travelling through SE Asia / Taiwan and are looking to 'sample' the local girls - then Hep B is HIGHLY recommended. The rates of infection are astronomical, as well as the potential for food borne transfer.
typhoid and malaria aren't really going to be a problem unless you're planning on living in the bush (the flora/fauna type) for a few weeks. |

Hepatitis B rates are very low in Taiwan among those in the 20s or younger. They were astronomical (15%), higher than the rest of South East Asia. Then came a very successful vaccination program.
Condoms.
If anyone has time and money (or NHS) then get vaccinated, but if you're only going to Taiwan the risks are low for anything. |
