Hi
I want to begin learning basic Japanese on line and as a first step I just want to practice simple sentences etc. Does anybody know of a good website/on line learning tool that I can easily access and begin to learn with.
An added bonus would be a site that has audio tools to speak along with.

Here's some i've used...
genkijapan.net - by the creator of genki english. great if you're just starting out and know nothing or almost nothing. Not so helpful for harder things.
Japanesepod101.com - great pod casts from beginer to advanced. Free to listen to on their site or you can pay to download to itunes and get additional info
http://nihongo-dekimasu.blogspot.jp/ - I haven't used this one but it's got a ton of info.

The website i used for a while and ill be going back to is http://www.livemocha.com
Its not so much on grammer but its very good for building sentances and vocabulary, there is audio recording for each course you do and you can also submit exercises from that module and japanese people will review it and comment |

I second japanesepod101...it's pretty good - and it's basic stuff is free. Otherwise I paid 8 dollars a month and got more lessons with great kanji/kana print outs to go with them.
It is mainly conversational though. |

I'll say! Their Japanese course appears to be a literal, word-for-word translation of their English course. It teaches sentences that a Japanese would never typically say. |

| It won't be to everyone's taste, but when I finally get around to starting on the kanji again, I'll use Kanji Damage. |

This site uses slightly unconventional methods, but the fist lesson is free and was really useful for me! Good luck, I've just started out as well
