Hello ALL,
I have a teaching job waiting for me in Qatar, unfortunately it is only for the pre-K -3 grades. Can anyone tell me about a good school for my 4th grader who will be attending school there. I need one that will most likely have space available. I am having a very difficult time finding one.
Thanks,
Rachel |

It looks likes schooling is going to get more expensive. If you have kids, make sure you get school fees in your package.

Schools seek Ministry permission for fee hike
Web posted at: 6/8/2009 6:11:34
Source ::: THE PENINSULA/ By MOHAMMED IQBAL
DOHA: Several private schools in Qatar have sought permission to raise their fees from the next academic session which begins in September, but the Ministry of Education is yet to take a decision on the requests, a senior official of the Department of Private Education said.
All the private and community schools are required to obtain prior permission from the Department before imposing any hike in their fees. Most of these schools had revised their fees over the past two years, citing a rise in operational costs due to the inflation in the country.
Recently, some schools had cited the recession as a reason to hike the fees and it is expected that more schools would follow suit.
We have received requests from some private schools seeking permission to raise their fees. However, we have not so far granted permission to any of these schools, Hamad Ali Al Sulaiti, director of the Private Education Department told The Peninsula yesterday.
He said a special committee at the Ministry will decide on the requests. Asked if the Department would favourably consider some of the requests, Al Sulaiti said, I can not say anything at this moment since the decision has to be taken by the committee.
Asked if there were plans to impose a maximum ceiling on fee hike, Al Sulaiti said this issue will also be decided by the committee.
When pointed out that some Indian schools had already raised their fees with effect from April this year, Al Sulaiti said, The academic year in Qatar begins in September, but there are schools following a different academic calendar, depending on the nature of their curriculum. Those who have already raised their fees must have taken permission from the Department in advance.

Interesting policy: no more than 20% representation of any nationality. My friends have just enrolled their 6 year old. This school looks very promising.
Sherborne Qatar is more than half full
By Neil Cook
Sherborne Qatar, the new international school due to open at its west Nasiriyah location on September 27, is well over half full as testing of prospective students continues daily, according to Elaine Stallard, joint project director.
The school is targeting an initial intake of 340 co-ed students from Reception through to Year 6 and will phase in classes catering for older students over the next few years that will offer IGCSEs, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate. All pupils will be taught the English National Curriculum.
We have about a dozen different nationalities already and the response from Qataris has been good, Stallard said yesterday. We will continue to be available for testing of outstanding students until we open and we will have a waiting list like other international schools in Doha.
English will be the primary language with Arabic compulsory and a decision has been made to teach French in all years as well, she added.
Richard Hodder-Williams, chairman of Sherborne governors at the prestigious public school in Dorset, England, told Gulf Times: Recruitment of staff has been absolutely amazing. We advertised in March and had 400 applications for 22 posts. All have experience of the English system and some have experience teaching overseas and especially in the Middle East.
Sherborne School originated in 705 and in 1550 it was given its Coat of Arms under a royal charter granted by Edward VI.
Sherborne Qatar is an initiative of Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Abdullah al-Thani.

Stay away from the Canadian School. It is all but useless. Many teachers recently left rather abruptly. The principal has just resigned due to incompetence. The 'Queen' who finances the place isn't the slightest bit interested in operating it as a school should be (putting the children first that is). Its management is very much like its mother institution CNAQ, also cr.... |

Sometimes they hire EFL teachers. Very highly paid they say.

German schools roll set to double
GSD class of 2008-2009 pose in a group photo at the school
Student numbers at the German School Doha (GSD) will almost double by the beginning of the next term on September 1, a schools spokesperson has said.
Founded in October 2008, around 50 girls and boys aged between three and 15 years, finished their first school year on Thursday.
GSD was an idea of Doha-based German construction companies mainly to attract employees with their families to re-locate to Qatar.
The German embassy also strongly supported the establishment of the school.
Led by a private school board, the concept education made in Germany is emphasised at GSD and the teaching staff for pre and primary school have studied in Germany.
German is the main language at GSD while English as a foreign language is offered.
From first grade onwards, mathematics, German and English are taught as major subjects. Arabic classes are expected in future.
School principal Ilka Detampel commented: Our goal is to provide not only first class education based on German educational standards for our German speaking students but also to attract local and international students as well as to function as an open house for intercultural exchange in Qatar.
Since March, the Initiative German Lessons Qatar in co-operation with the GSD and the German Business Council Qatar offers German language lessons for adult beginners and the lessons are based on Goethe Institute curriculum.
The school is situated in Al Maamoura area, near Decoration roundabout

I'm a crypt-reader, VS. The text is a bit archaic, but after cross-referencing, it reads: "I've fallen down and I can't get up!"
