By chance, earlier this week I found out that this place:
http://www.internationalteflacademy.com/
Is a short train ride away from my house.

Now I'm considering taking a course there to earn TEFL Certification. My goal is to find job in Japan in either the fall or spring. How much will being TEFL certified improve my odds of getting a teaching position?

Before I sign up, has anyone here ever gotten TEFL certification through the International TEFL Academy. How would you rate the quality? Are there better options or is it one of the best?

Do you have a degree and a passport from an anglophone country then tread lightly. A TEFL cert is NOT needed for a job in Japan (but having one won't hurt beyond the tuition and may help when you get dropped into your first class) but the degree is.

Like the vast majority of TEFL course providers they work harder to sell the dream of travel rather than the qualities of the course. Add them to the list of dream sellers.

I agree. Plus, it's suspect that they refer to their instructors as "professors" on their website, even though their TEFL course isn't part of any university program.

From the lengthy 'CELTA Method' thread, I've concluded that if you're going to fork out money for a cert, get a CELTA or equivalent. I even question the value of an Oxford Associates TEFL. Don't know about the US, but TESL Canada Federation (TESL.ca) provides a current list of recognized training programs.

Does anyone have anything more to add? Anyone actually take a course there?

I know their courses are 160 hours. How does that compare to other programs?

if you simply want an attractive degree-like parchment to hang
on the wall, there's an ongoing thread about a groupon discount
tefl course. 120 hours for $59.
