A poster on the newbie forum has suggested that it's very common ('typical') to work illegally in Latin America. What do you think?

This could be quite useful info for people considering teaching in the region.

I do not work illegally, but I know several people who do, I'd say around 10 out of like 100ish foriegn English teachers.

I do know an individual who went to Ecuador, chose the illegal route, got caught, and spent a few nasty nasty days in jail and paid a lot of money in bribes to get out, before being shown the border.

This individual is back in Ecuador, bought land, built a house, does some teaching, but most income comes from other sources. How this was managed, I have no idea, and prefer not to know.

I can't vote, I'm in Mexico. I work here legally.
