I am moving to Medellin in a couple months, and I'll need to bring a few dollars down with me. What is the best way to do this.

Is there any place in the city where I could gain access to my money, which is in an American bank account? Or should I bring cash or travelers checks or something like that?

Would my credit card (VISA) work anywhere in Colombia?

Would it be difficult to open a Colombian bank account?

Are there places that are better for exchanging USD to COP, or places I should avoid?

How do teaching institutes typically pay their employees? (cash, check, etc)

Thanks so much for any help!

Traveller's checks? Do those still exist? Just bring an ATM card. This also eliminates the need to change your money.

Credit cards aren't as popular here as in the states, but VISA is accepted pretty much anywhere that accepts cards.

You can't open a bank account on a tourist visa, but it's easy if you have a work visa.

Yep, ATM machines are the way to go. Just let your bank and credit card company know you'll be abroad and bring some cash to change at the airport in case your bank ignores you and locks your card anyway.
