Though I have over three years experience in ESL, I soon will have earned an M.A. in history and I am looking for a teaching job in Russia, preferably in US history/government, although I wouldn't be opposed teaching English again. I have lived in Russia and Ukraine and I would say my Russian ability is average.
Who among you is teaching or has taught at a Russian University? How did you get the job? What was the salary?
Has anyone taught or know of someone who taught at any private primary/secondary schools in Russia?

Dear Buck,
I posted a reply to Kent's message about average pay, so you can read it there. In brief, I am working at Novosibirsk State University and must say honestly, it's not a living wage... even with extra hours at a private language school. The primary problem is that contracts are based on hourly pay, holidays and vacations are not paid... and are extensive. Also, the state school system simply does not have the resources to pay for your visa, health insurance, an apartment, never mind subsidize your return airfare. If you agree to work at a Russian state school or university, make sure it is for minimal hours. It may look good on the resume, but it's not a living. Strictly for the retired, favorably married (to someone with a big salary) or those on a trust fund.
Best, Diana |
