Hi Turbster,
Thanks for your reply. Are you sure that will be in the case? Technically, at the time of application I will only have 1.5 years of university experience (1 year post-MA).
Are other viewers in agreement with the above sentiments?
Secondly, when will the universities and recruiters begin hiring for Sept 2013? When would be the earliest I could expect to receive any offers if I am succesfull?
Ideally, I like to receive something by June time as I expect my current university would want a definite answer regarding re-contracting by July so they have time to find a replacement. |

Here's the problem... things with these recruiters can be VERY unpredictable. You could apply tomorrow and they would make an offer, you accept... and then all goes quiet. Your papers gather dust on some recruiters desk as he makes dozens of other offers. Things go into high gear again sometime after Ramadhan in August... your papers finally get to the Ministry and they decide to not accept the credentials. (worst case scenario)
The Ministry is getting strict since in the past the recruiters mainly required breathing as the main credential and were bringing in borderline people who caused some major issues. So... be sure that when you would arrive you would have at least the minimum credentials and experience stated in the ad.
Don't restrict yourself to just TATI. There are many recruiters for the same positions and they all have some issues and problems that they seen to exchange every year or so. The key is to look at the situation in the location where they want to place you. Much also depends on the management at the college where you will be headed. And, of course, they change regularly too. These small Ministry colleges in the hinterlands are a total crapshoot.
Have I managed to confuse you further?

Hi VS,
No, don't worry you haven't confused me, I understand things are changeable. The point you mentioned is a factor of concern, perhaps I apply and get accepted, hand in my notice at my current university only to find just before August things are a no go!
I feel ready to leave Korea after this year but part of me feels that it may be best to stay for an extra contract until July 2014. Oh decisions, decisions!

Ahhh... the familiar itchy feet problem we TEFLers seem to suffer from regularly... or perhaps the "grass is greener" thing.
It might make sense to spend that one more year so that your experience matches what the majority of them ask for... taking away that worry. At the same time you can be familiarizing yourself with the latest buzz in teaching writing to be ready for interviews with employers that are more demanding than these recruiters who are more into quantity of hires rather than quality.

I have asked this question on the UAE forum and some of you have kindly offered advice. I was hoping you could answer the question regarding Oman.
So, here in Oman ... it seems like the main way to get uni jobs is through the recruiters such as TATI and CECN. It has also been mentioned the some universities hire directly through their websites. Are there are general websites that the universities post their jobs on? What sites should I watch? For example, in Korea, here on Dave's is the place. What about Oman?
Thank you |

Visit the uni websites (may also be ads here):
Sultan Qaboos University (also interviews at TESOLArabia & TESOL US)
University of Nizwa
Modern College of Business and Science
Mazoon College (all women, but they hire male teachers)
I know that there are others. You can probably google up a list of colleges and then start browsing their websites.

| When do they usually start advertising? Is the same as the UAE around Dec/Jan? |

VS,
I think you meant Al Zahra College
rossc,
I believe you could still get a teaching position in Oman from now till January perhaps. Many of these colleges (MOM ones included) are quite short on teachers right now. If you do not want to go with the recruiters for the MOM colleges, then the best way is to check the websites of these colleges just as VS said. |

For sets of links to the websites of Oman's
universities and colleges, both public and private -go to:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Oman
The background information may be of value to
those with an interest in teaching in one of them, too.

No... I meant Mazoon. It has been around from some years. Al Zahra is new I believe.

I am not actually looking at jobs right now. My current contact finishes in August 2013, I may or may not stay in Korea for one more year after that for extra experience.
Either way I'll be applying for vacancies beginning one September. Therefore for September jobs, do they get advertised in Oman at the beginning in Dec/Jan time like the UAE?
Regards

Maybe... probably... sometimes...
This is the Middle East. Nothing is set in stone. I would visit the websites of the employers that interest you weekly to see what is coming up... I'd start the December before you want to start.
Also the jobs page here... the TESOL website... and the Higher Chronicles often has ads too.

Thanks for the advice again, you are a gold mine
I've been doing some reading about Oman, seems like an amazing country and I think I'd really like to go there before I head to the UAE. I was thinking of waiting for September 2014 but I am really getting itchy feet now
But, I keep hearing about all the problems getting visas and perhaps dumped by the ministry after an agency offers the job. It worries me as I have apartment back home and need to be able to keep sending the pay home. It comes back to that whole thing of my 2 years university experience only being 1.5 years post-MA, which is less than what the ads say! Hence, perhaps the ministry could say no!
I feel like I want to make the jump as I am ready, but the Mr. Be Prepared and Organised inside me always has some extremely good arguments that I can't counter!!
Also, I am gonna start learning Arabic before I come, anyone had any positive experiences with Rosetta Stone? I know it's not perfect but it seems the best there is out there. |

I would recommend Pimsleur for learning basic Arabic, Google it.
