This is not referring to home food storage, but when an organization (Salvation Army, churches, etc) collects and distributes food for the poor. I assume that is the usage that Scot was not familiar with...

In the US you hear "food bank" and "food pantry" to describe these.

Must be US usage. A "pantry" in UKspeak (archaic) is a place in your house where you keep food. The other place is a "FOOD BANK".

In North America, a pantry is a small room (for drygoods - beans, flour, spices, etc.) off the kitchen. A below ground food storage place is referred to (in my part of North America) as a cold cellar - potatoes, onions, carrots, home canned goods etc are kept there during the winter

We'd call that a "root cellar" in my part of the US or just the "cellar" - tends to suggest dirt floor/walls... and a resident black snake to keep the rodents down. Good reason I never moved to a farm.

While we did have a cold celler with a dirt floor for much of my growing up years we "upgraded" to a cee ment one in 1970 (reminds me of the cee-ment pond in the Beverly Hillbillies) - and it is accessible from the rest of the heated basement! Luxury!

The new moon was sighted in KSA tonight so Ramadan is over and Eid has begun.

The moon sighting is dependent upon where you are located, not just KSA. Where I am in U.S. Eid will be Sunday. Moonsighting is not adjusted to just KSA and they have been getting it wrong the last couple of years due to the use of computer moon modeling and not actual sightings.

There have been long debates about this in KSA. Despite new technology they still insist on an actual sighting of the moon by a sane adult male.. I admire their tenacity in the face of new technology !
