It really depends on the institution. In some places there might be someone who slaves away burning the midnight oil and his contract is not renewed. Another colleague might conveniently slip out at 3:00 every afternoon, but still be considered a worthwhile contributor to the team. I've even seen cases where extremely dedicated teachers put in extra time, and therefore, push the students. Then the students complain. It's not always the case, but it has happened.

Play it safe the first year. If you are an Engineering Professor, the department might be more flexible than some Foundation Programs. That said, not all Foundation Program require you punch a clock.

Get to know your colleagues. In many cases, there will be someone who is well-connected and reports to those above.

I studied the Saudi Work Ethic for many years and became quite adept at doing nothing very nuch.

Yes, I guess I will just have to get used to working by the clock. My intention is not to 'cheat' time requirements. I am just a one subject instructor (not professor) so I will put in the required hours to prep my class. I'm just used to Flexitime.
