Has anyone got any advice on what VPN would be good to use in China.

Off to live and work in China next week and I would like a VPN so that i can access facebook and also BBC iplayer.

Another EFL site recommends Atrill, but internet searches reveal lots of negative comments

Any advice?

Thanks

Simon

I also am going to China next week, and am looking for a VPN. strongvpn is 85 dollars for a year. I had hoped to find something that was cheaper. But, if that is the best one,I will get it. Any others?

Witopia, $60/year. You won't find one any cheaper that works as well as this one does.

Thank you. Am I right in assuming that I would need one to watch shows on HULU, and to download movies?

You can download movies or anything else you want from any torrent site without a VPN.

I had VPN Express, Astrill, and they were both slow as molasses in Mongolia on a cold winter day. I read what you guys wrote about strongvpn and that sucker is quite zippy! Thanks.

Does anyone have a list of FREE VPNs. My spouse is Jewish and if I can't eat it or share it with them, I can't buy it!

I have only had one, so can not compare, but Witopia has worked well for me.

I read an article from some Geek website about six months ago that if you have windows 7 you don't really need a VPN and can configure a "virtual server" of your own somehow for free that gets around the firewall. I should have bookmarked that article because now I can't find it. Do you guys know what I'm talking about?

Check out torrentfreak.com They are a well known and popular site that have a freshly updated articles rating and discussing VPNs. Obviously China comes up a lot.

The whole world is working on getting around the great firewall of China. Try a google search. China is losing BTW as witnessed by the entire country being shut down recently by a DOS originating from a single website in the US devoted to breaking it.

I'm going to butt in here and ask a question.

I live in Mexico, can I use a (free) VPN to make Amazon think I'm in the US?
There is some digital content I want to put on my kindle for my kids that says it's not available to me, and since I just recently made a trip to the US I won't be going back for a while.

Yes. A VPN can do that, depends if they have servers in the US (most will). There are also addons to various browsers (firefox / chrome) that would provide access to region-locked content.
