Sorry to correct you there Guy, but there was absolutely no public information about Yuri's flight until AFTER he landed. Maybe the Americans had some inkling of what was going on, but there was nothing about his launch in Soviet press beforehand, or in international press either. Heck, his own family didn't even know he was in the space programme. |
Just read back on your post and I see that I mis-read a point you made, on coverage of the launch itself. Sorry. I was referring to media over the entire period. |

Ah, I get you now. No worries. I should have written it a little more clearly. Or written it before my lunchtime bottle. Amounts to much the same thing, hic! |

There are still people who insist that the whole thing was a fake - filmed by Disney. |

Yes, there are always a few weirdos on the fringes of every event.
Neil Armstrong remains a hero, as do his Comrades on the other side of the world. |

Desr Sasha,
" . . . but there was nothing about his launch in Soviet press beforehand, or in international press either. Heck, his own family didn't even know he was in the space programme."
In case things didn't go as planned, do you think?
Regards,

Dear Johnslat
That was my whole point. The rumour is that there were previous attempts to launch a man into space, but that the cosmonaut didn't survive. Not much propaganda value there. So, according to this story, Yuri was, more correctly, the first man to come back from space alive and well enough to be massively photographed.
'Tis but a rumour, though... hic! |
