If the university is in fact truly committed to recruiting overseas teachers of English, and well-funded enough to offer an attractive salary, then it would be normal to expect them to pay any fees associated with the recruitment - including visas. It's a litmus test. Why would they scrimp on this, when they're offering you thousands of dollars in salary?

Taking up a post like this is inherently risky for all kinds of reasons, many of which (e.g. nature of the work, cultural differences, resources, unfamiliarity with regulations, relationships with staff and students, living arrangements etc etc) are essentially unpredictable and outside your control. The likelihood is that it won't be a success - most new ventures, based as they so often are on limited information, experience and contacts, aren't.

If you do decide to embark on any risky new venture then, it makes sense to minimise those risks and costs that ARE within your control - in particular, costs associated with travel and relocation. Your aim should be that, if things don't work out, you can say to yourself: I came to no harm; I lost nothing; I learnt something; all I wasted was my time.
