On the newbie forum, a poster has stated that it's typical to work illegally in SE Asia. I don't know anything myself about the region, but I am interested how 'typical' this is - and I think it would be helpful information for people considering coming to the region to work.
So, how 'typical' is illegal work, in your experience? |

I wonder how many folks will answer this question truthfully. |

Good question - I suppose that if it's so 'typical,' there are few penalties or it's highly unlikely that one will get caught, so perhaps no need to worry about giving onesself away. |

Yes, I have, but haven't done so for years. I may do so again, but I'd rather not.
That reply looks like an excellent forum signature, doesn't it? |

I work illegally in China, not southeast Asia though I am not so far from Vietnam, and just voted, so I am one of two out of thousands of workers! There are many many people here in China working on L (tourist), X (student), and F (business, not supposed to be residents working on an ongoing basis within the country) visas. I don't know much about southeast Asia though my gut tells me it is probably not so different from China. |

In Korea, the majority of teachers (and I have met thousands) have a valid work visa (E2) but there are lots who work illegally on the side (private lessons). There are consequences if caught but the risk is minimal.
In Thailand it is estimated that about 1/2 of all English teachers are working illegally (incorrect visa or no work permit). Of those who do have proper visas and work permits, I have only met 3 who did not work illegally (outside the scope of their work permits) over the last 4 years.

If you have a valid visa to be in the country, that is what really matters. Do visa runs and you will be fine. |

Is this based on experience?
How long have you been in Asia?
From your previous posts it would appear you would have landed in Vietnam around the beginning of August this year. |

Spiral...... yes, a lot of workers here in Vietnam have no work permits.
They generally work for down-market language mills.
Not as many as before as they are finding it more and more awkward to extend their visas.
Schools are also beginning to clean up their act.
I would always recommend doing things by the book. |

In Asia?
Surely you mean Mexico. 1600 posts on this forum....... only 1600?
I don't think you have the cudos to advise on Asian practices and I think your post is misleading. |

Pursuing personal agendas and taking jabs at other members usually result in short tenures here.
Report same to the Mod Team and do not be tricked into responding because if you do, you then become part of the problem rather than the solution.
You do not want to become part of the problem on this board. |
