Hi,

1. Is there reliable, secure internet available in Phnom Penh you can get in your house? If so, how much is it per month?

2. Are power outages common in Phnom Penh and if so, how long do they typically last?

Thanks!!! Hope you're enjoying Cambodia....

1. The internet situation in Cambodia is continually improving. The most visible ISP in the country is: http://www.ezecom.com.kh/

There are numerous others. I used Metfone when I was there about 2 years ago, but it appears that they may now be defunct. The cost was $29/mo.

While reliability wasn't much of an issue, the speed may be noticeably slower than what you are used to.

I'm not sure about security, but I had no problem. What security issues are you concerned about?

2. I didn't experience much in the way of power outages, but I've heard that they are more common in some parts of town [Phnom Penh]. I'm not sure which though. I imagine smaller provincial towns, such as Sihanoukville, Siem Reap, Battambang, etc., would be worse.

Very few power outages in Siem Reap as the power now comes from Thailand. Sihanoukville can be out for up to 16 hours per day in some areas. Phnom Penh is hit and miss and depends on location, although the power supply city-wide seems to have improved considerably of late. Things are worse during the 'hot season', when anyone who can afford it usually has the air conditioning at full blast. The cuts are supposed to be 'rolling', however some areas are hit more frequently or out for longer than others. The trick is to try to find accommodation close to an area where the moneyed/political/military elite live. Alternatively, some commercial areas can also be good, as business owners will sometimes bri ..... er ..... persuade the electricity company not to cut them off.

Internet connections range from mediocre to good, depending on the service provider and the type of package and/or set up you choose. Do your research, as there are lots of companies offering different plans, and things can change virtually from week-to-week. Many expats (and locals) tend to shop around and switch plans/providers quite regularly.
