There are certainly international flights - mainly from the Gulf States to Al Ain. Gulfies like the Islamic atmosphere for their holidays. It also gives them an opportunity to practrise their Urdu. Only place I have been where street signs are in Englsin. Arabic and Urdu !

Not sure where you are referring to, Scot... I don't recall seeing signs in Urdu in the Gulf. They might be handy in the UAE since the taxi drivers normally speak Urdu...

Dear scot47,
"Or was that a prophetic vision?"
It was a sign.

I visited there quite a few times - and drove through even more, but don't recall any. I only remember English/Arabic signs on the roads. I tried googling some tri-lingual signs and all that came up was lots and lots of bi-lingual. Very curious...

Right now, street signs in Al Ain and the rest of the Emirates are solely bilingual (English/Arabic), however, signage in Government buildings such as DMVs are trilingual and sometimes even quintilingual (English/Arabic/Urdu/Hindi/Farsi). |

Thanks for that... I couldn't figure out if Scot was imagining or I was just not paying attention. The only government office I was ever in was to get my driving license... one visit - 20 years ago in Abu Dhabi... so I just may not have noticed if they were there. It certainly makes sense as all the taxi drivers tend to speak Urdu... but is literacy required?

For those of you considering a day trip
across the border to Al Ain, take a look
at the "Oasis Living" magazine....
