|

Hey folks. I am coming to JP this weekend and I have luck of being able to stay for a night with a family that I used to teach. If it wasn't for their generosity, I would be staying at a hotel until my apartment is ready so I am really grateful.
They are an older couple - 50-60s. I havent seen them in 5 years and I'd like to bring them some gifts out of politeness. The problem is that I don't know what to get them. I know they like to have family get-togethers and do wine tasting but I'm not sure if I can put a couple bottles of wine in my luggage without it being over the weight limit.
Do you have any idea what other gifts would be polite to give to someone their age?
Thanks in advance. |

This is an extremely serious question. One of vital importance to your entire future in Japan. After all, word will get around so it's important you get it right. Considering all the factors a bottle of viagra and two sets of double A batteries is probably the right choice for you. |

That's cute but I'm just trying to be polite. I was only in JP for a year previously and I did not really grasp the gift-giving norms so I am just asking for a little advice from experienced expats like yourself.
I know that gift giving is important and I'd like to have this family on my side if I ever need any support while in the country.
Cheers! |

Just be careful with gift giving, its customary that if you receive a gift you should give back something of greater value so by getting something really expensive you might be putting more pressure on them than you expected! |

I was thinking that, since they enjoy wine, I could use my cc to buy a couple of bottles when I arrive. But do they have them at Kansai airport? |

Do your homework and look at what shops are in Kansai airport by Googling the website. Maybe you'll find what you want without you and Cthulhu needing to go off on each other again. LOL |

I have no problem with Cthulhu. He just like to pounce on any comment that doesn't strike his fancy. But I understand. With a name like Cthulhu, I'd be angry all the time too. |
