In Northeast Asia, it is easy to say China of course. Korea too.
How about...
Middle East?
Eastern Europe?
Southeast Asia?
Latin America?
Africa?
Antarctica? |

Best, as in what?
Most profit?
Nicest living conditions? (Subjective)
Nicest people? (Again, subjective)
Best climate?
I wouldn't agree with your assessment of China, but you don't give anything to go on. |

Russia is clearly the best in all the categories that Glenski mentioned. Why anybody would choose to live elsewhere is a perpetual mystery to me, hic! |

Antarctica but not North America?
In North America- Quebec. Low cost of living, large population of potential students/clients (about 7+ million), decent social programs ($7 daycare), high demand for (qualified) ESL instructors, and an incredible selection of cheeses.
The downside is that you must be a Canadian citizen (or qualified to work in Canada) and being bilingual in French is required for nearly all positions. |

Yeah, all of those things as a whole! Subjective opinions very welcome!
I put China just because it is a place where basically anyone can get a job, Korea for respectable salary plus often free housing. |

Actually Japan still ranks fairly high.
- Current strong Yen (against other major currencies) means your money goes farther when traveling outside the country
- Modern country with reliable speedy public transport service
- Relatively safe food supply (any radiation fears are generally over-reported paranoia)
- Very safe when compared with other 'modern' countries, especially for incidences of violence
- Work visa belongs to you personally, not the company (hence no rush to find another employer if you part ways with a company)
- Modern medical system
- Healthiest food in the world (as measured in terms of longevity studies) |

Japan sounds like a very nice place, but that doesn't give much insight into what the job market for English teachers is like. |

You should come to the Japan forum for more details on that.
Assuming you have only a bachelor's degree, you will qualify for entry level work: ALT or conversation school (eikaiwa) instructor. Not usually held in the highest regard, but it's what you make of it.
Job market is very competitive right now. Expect 20-150 candidates for each job in many cases. For further info, come to the forum. |

The UAE (especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi) in the Arabian Gulf for those seeking a good quality of life, climate (hot), and high salary/benefits. However, in order to get one of those great-paying jobs, you need some solid qualifications, such as: a current teaching license and 2-3 years' experience for k-12; several years of experience and a relevant BA (MA preferred) for vocational TEFL jobs; and a relevant MA plus 2-3 years of experience for TEFL positions at the university level. A CELTA or equivalent TEFL cert is a must for EFL jobs. Language schools do exist in the UAE; however, they tend to hire locally to fill teaching spots, and so the salaries are lower and the benefits minimal.
Competition for uni positions is high. Moreover, universities generally want to see a specific calibre or level of teaching experience as well as professional development. In other words, several years of university EFL teaching in, say, China, isn't likely to impress them. What's acceptable in one educational situation isn't always a good fit in another.
Teachaway.com gives a good overview of teaching and life in the Emirates. |
