Bayabule has posted a really useful article on the Indonesia Job Information Journal about items that people going to Indonesia for the first time should bring, and those items that there is no point in bringing.
Can anyone add to this? Bayabule writes from a woman's perspective - but what about the men?
This would be very useful for those of us planning to teach in Indonesia for the first time. |

A decent Aftershave balm was very difficult to find.
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups
English books (usually only self help books, childrens books and classics are available in Indonesia)
Scentless underarm deodorant
Tea bags (apart from green Chinese tea or Lipton)
Silk Cut
Music - bring a large selection |

Other than for a couple of used books stores on Jalan Jaksa, it is very hard to find English-language novels.
It's almost impossible to buy a cheap used laptop computer here, so if you like using a laptop, bring one from home. |

Oh my God, I wrote that months ago when I was slightly drunk and bored and forgot all about it. Glad you think it's useful. Never thought they'd actually post it!
I came back to Indonesia at the end of March and haven't had a chance to log on since then, thanks to the rubbishy Indo internet connections.
One thing I want to add to my bit about motorbikes is that you really MUST bring an international driver's licence or get a local one. My friend recently had a very bad accident and there were major hassles because we couldn't find her licence. The police were demanding huge sums of money. Luckily we did find it and only had to pay half a mil to get the bike back.
Here in Sby it costs Rp700,000 to get a local one. Depends on the area. I am definitely getting one just as soon as payday comes... |

Lucky you! I might be better off paying the airfare to Jakarta and getting it there...
What kind of licence have you got?
I asked our school's head sec to find out for me and she said the police told her that bules aren't allowed to have licences for motorbikes only for cars (that's the 700,000 one ) and that the car one isn't acceptable if I get into trouble on my bike. She says the police told her that only poor people ride motorbikes and as bules are rich they only need car licences!!!! This is the first I've ever heard of this.
The problem is that I never got a licence in the UK so I have no Int licence. Basically she said that i can go ahead and get a car licence, but if anything happens on my bike it won't be any use. I don't think I'll bother now.
I'd be interested to know what you think about this.... |
