|
|
Hello
I am a 27 year old woman. I have been teaching biology and English for ELL students for 2.5 years in a pubic American high school
I want to work at a DoDD school. I don't really care where (Guam or Cuba sound great)
I have my BA in English Education and a M.Ed in TESL. I am certified to teach biology, English, and ESL in my state. I have applied online to DoDEA and it says I'm not qualified to teach biology because I don't have 50% of my coursework done in biology! Yikes that was kind of my meal ticket there.
1. How useful is a cert in ESL to get a job at a DoDD school? I'd prefer teaching ESL over English.
2. How likely is it that I will get a job at semester (Jan 2013) or should I just wait til Aug 2013
I have no dependents
THANKS
Any advice/stories would be greatly appreciated |

I have a couple friends teaching Spanish in DoDD schools. Competition is tough. One got in because her father was military, the other guy jumped the 2 year waiting list because he knew the teacher who was retiring.
You have a science cert, so just are missing courses. So take some more.
WeDoDude says this, "You will have no problems getting hired by DoDEA if your certs are in a high needs area. Those high needs areas are:
Special Education
ESL
Math
Science"

It's hard to predict the need for DoDEA teachers abroad and nationally; you just have to apply to see whether your qualifications are a match and if the timing and the teaching location are ideal. Anyway, you might want to read up on teaching ESL in DoDEA schools. Try http://www.dodea.edu/Curriculum/ESL/index.cfm for starters. In fact, I suggest taking time to thoroughly check out the DoDEA site.
By the way, I'm a proud product of the DoDEA schools. |

NG:
My dad was in the US Army; I attended DoD schools mostly while living overseas. That was ages ago, but I've always maintained that I'd received a solid education---one that put me ahead of my peers when I started attending public schools once stateside. Can you imagine seventh graders in the US taking a class about world religions? Additionally, I had mandatory language classes in each foreign, host country. (Just wish I'd kept up with those languages...) Anyway, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. |
